Why employers ask for rent receipts
Your employer needs proof of rent to allow HRA exemption in your TDS. Without receipts, full HRA gets taxed and shows up in Form 16, forcing you to claim it back at filing.
What you'll need
- Receipts for the months you're claiming.
- Landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000.
- A revenue stamp on receipts where rent above ₹5,000 was paid in cash.
- A rent agreement, if your employer asks for one (most do).
FAQ
Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?
Yes — rent paid to parents is allowed if it's a real arrangement: a rent agreement, money actually transferred, and parents declaring it as income in their ITR. Don't pay yourself rent for a property you co-own.
When is landlord's PAN mandatory?
If annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 (₹8,333/month). If the landlord doesn't have a PAN, you need a signed declaration from them with Form 60.
How many receipts do I need to submit?
Most employers ask for monthly or quarterly receipts. Some accept a single consolidated yearly receipt. Check with your payroll team — when in doubt, generate monthly.
